Sex, Advice and the Role

of the Agony Aunt

In the past two decades there has been a dramatic expansion in the sources of sex advice, particularly for young people. These now include telephone and text advice, websites offering advice and information, charities tackling sexual health, reproductive and relationship problems and specialist agencies campaigning for the rights of young people, LGBTQ groups and adults. The linking of sex and relationships, both as ‘health’ and ‘lifestyle’ issues, has worked to further expand the range of advice sources available. All of these developments have added to the increasing variety of media representations of sex.

Despite the glut of advice in contemporary society, advice and advice giving is under-researched and agony aunts – the people in an ‘expert’ position to give advice – are not taken seriously by social science researchers or journalists (McRobbie, 1991; Boynton, 2006).

This is partly due to the fact that sex and relationships are often overlooked in the social sciences and dismissed as ‘lite’ topics in journalism (Boynton and Callaghan, 2006). This chapter explores the history of sex and the problem page, reflects on issues affecting contemporary advice giving and predicts future trends in this important area for sex information.
